Character Name: Edward Locksher
Age: 17
Race: Male Human
Factions: Beacon Academy
Attitude: Analytical and scholarly with a strong sense of justice, willing to go above and beyond to put his friends’ needs ahead of his own. He has zero tolerance for criminals and those who oppress others. Consequently, he despises the White Fang, who he views as a group of terrorists using fear and violence to achieve a misguided goal of retribution for past wrongs, and he thinks such measures are counterproductive. The subject of the White Fang is a sore subject for Edward (see below), but this does not translate into blanket discrimination against the Faunus in general because he understands that the White Fang only represents a radical minority of Faunus. Additionally, Edward is somewhat shy in social situations and sometimes his attempts to be more self-confident are misinterpreted as arrogance, but this is something that he continuously works on in an attempt to make friends.
Appearance: [NOTE: I am no artist, so the drawing above may not be very good.] Edward is a little shorter than his peers (5’ 5”), but physically fit to meet the demands of dual wielding swords. He has short dark brown hair, hazel eyes, a pale complexion and a small scar on his cheek. He wears a hooded coat that is white and blue with tail coats trailing down along with simple jeans and boots. He also has a hooded undershirt he wears with his formal school uniform.
Weapons: Edward inherited his fathers’ twin steel cutlasses named Law and Order, each approximately 3 feet in length. Both swords have a bell guard on the hilt providing a blunt melee weapon in close quarters while protecting his hands. Dual wielding swords was something Edward struggled with as a child because he lacked the physical strength to block attacks without having the swords knocked out of his hands. The lack of stability with single handed swords compared to two handed weapons and the absence of a shield left himself vulnerable if an attacker was able to wear down his arms and wrists to get past his defenses. However, his uncle, Glenn Watsun, helped Edward hone his physical strength to master dual wielding, allowing him to become proficient with the weapons. The two swords can be combined into an assault rifle known as the Peacekeeper. The two blades combine to form the barrel of the gun while the tips of the swords slide underneath to form a small bayonet. The hilt of Law forms the stock of the rifle while the hilt of Order connects to the barrel to form the firing mechanism. Like all assault rifles, the firing rate can alternate from semi-automatic fire to burst fire and fully automatic fire depending upon Edward’s preference for the situation. Edward carries on him a bandolier of assault rifle magazines with varying types of ammunition based on the type of Dust infused with the metal of the bullets. In addition to standard bullets, armor piercing and sleeping darts, Edward’s Dust infused bullets can either create static shocks (lightning), freeze impact points (ice) or explode on contact (fire). However, these custom rounds are difficult to make and are expensive, but Edward has money set aside that he uses to maintain a limited but adequate dust supply. Additionally, Edward also has a custom telescopic sight that can be fitted to the top of the Peacekeeper or be used separately for Edward to see at medium to long ranges allowing for precision shots when needed. The telescopic sight also includes night vision and infrared modes.
Other Info: Edward’s semblance is something that he refers to as “Analytical Foresight.” He has the heightened ability to analyze his opponent and surroundings to look for weaknesses while also being able to see the attacks his opponents will make before they attack via a type of muscle memory analysis, making it easier for Edward to anticipate incoming attacks and block with one sword while counter-attacking with the other. As an encounter continues, Edward is able to learn more about his opponents and their fighting styles to utilize that information to find and exploit possible weaknesses. However, there are limits to his Foresight: it is entirely dependent on his current understanding of his surroundings, so it is possible for him to be blind-sided. Additionally, Foresight does not confer any speed benefit, so someone moving fast enough may be able to land an attack before Edward has time to react even though he will see the attack coming. Other attacks may just be so strong that it breaks though his defenses even though Edward is able to bring his swords up to block to avoid greater harm than a direct hit. Lastly, humans tend to be more unpredictable than the creatures of Grimm making it somewhat harder for Edward to predict human attacks without learning more about their fighting styles.
History: Edward Locksher grew up in the small town of Bakerstown on the outskirts of the city of Vale. In Bakerstown, Huntsmen and Huntresses not only fought the creatures of Grimm in the nearby forests, but also served as informal mediators and peacekeepers to resolve disputes between the residents of Bakerstown. Edward’s father, Andrew, was a judge in Vale who presided over the murder trial of one of the White Fang operatives who abducted and executed board members of the Schnee Dust Company. On the night that the White Fang operative was convicted and sentenced to life in prison, Edward (age 7) was playing hide and seek with his dad. While Edward hid in a closet, the doorbell rang and Andrew answered the door. From Edward’s perspective, he saw a tall man in a black trench coat with red hair spiked backwards. He wore a distinct white mask with red engravings that covered his eyes. When Andrew asked what the man wanted, the man just smiled, pulled out a red sword that seemed to glow and stabbed Andrew in the chest while Edward watched in horrified silence from the dark closet. The man then walked into the kitchen where Edward’s mother, Laura, was preparing dinner and stabbed her too. He then walked back to a dying Andrew laying in the doorway, sneered and said, “The White Fang sends it regards, human.” After the man in black left, Edward crawled out of the closet towards his dead father, sat there and cried.
Now an orphan, Edward went to live with his only family remaining; his uncle Glenn Watsun (Edward’s mother’s older brother) and his 7 year old female cousin Robyn. As part of the Locksher’s life insurance policy, Edward received a sizable amount of money, which Uncle Glenn insisted on Edward keeping in the bank for him to use when he got older, despite the fact that Uncle Glenn earned a meager living working at the docks in Vale’s harbor. Edward left the money in the bank to earn interest and used the interest earned to fund Dust purchases for his custom bullets. Both Edward and Robyn attended Icon Academy to learn how to become Huntsmen. At school, Edward and Robyn were close friends and confided in one another about their problems, especially Edward who found it difficult to make other friends, whereas Robyn was much more outgoing and popular at Icon. They would also bail each other out of the bad situations they found themselves in, even though the cause of some of these incidents was Robyn’s own mischievous nature and special talent for finding trouble. Where Edward struggled to make friends beyond Robyn, he excelled in his studies and combat training graduating at the top of his class as a skilled swordsman, marksman and well versed in most academic fields, especially history and the law having learned a great deal from his father before his untimely death. His parents’ murder is still a sensitive subject and finding his parents’ killer is always an issuing lurking in the back of his mind.
Role Play Sample:
The sparing bot lunged in for another salvo of attacks which Edward quickly deflected with a thunderous clang. He shifted his parry into a counter-thrust, but the advanced bot was able to keep pace with Edward’s strikes providing the challenge Edward needed to keep his skills sharp. The abandoned field near the house was lit up by the soft moon light as if Edward was battling gladiators in an arena. Ideal conditions to simulate the arena I will be competing under in the morning for the Beacon Academy Exams, Edward thought.
Just then, the sparing bot launched a broad cross stroke that nearly decapitated Edward had he not brought his blades to bear and sidestepped underneath the sweeping slash. This advanced sparing bot was one of the three newer models Icon Academy purchased for advanced combat training, and Edward was able to borrow it for personal training, even though no one knew about it or consented to Edward taking the bot. It’s okay, Edward thought. I’ll bring it back before class tomorrow. No one will know. I’m sure Robyn would approve of this “borrowing.” The idea of his cousin being proud of him for uncharacteristically stealing from other people brought a quiet smile to his face, appreciating the irony of the situation.
Edward landed a cross slash against the face of the bot’s optical lens exposing the red internal wiring. The intricate pattern of wires bulging from the gash seemed to create an intricate mask that bore a striking resemblance to....the man in black! Like a flash of lightning, Edward saw the face of his parents’ killer in the face of the sparing bot with the same smug smirk he gave his father before ending his life while Edward sat in the closet, too afraid and helpless to do anything but watch in horror. Had Edward stayed in that closet a bit longer, he would have missed the sparing bot’s attempt to skewer him the same way the man in black skewered his father. With a flick of his wrist, Edward launched the bot’s sword to the side and then launched into a frenzy of strikes fueled by bloodlust and sadness until the bot lay on the ground in a smoking, sparking heap of twisted metal and frayed wires. Edward dropped to his knees exhausted with tears streaming down his face.
“I think you got him,” a familiar voice said from behind. Edward quickly rose and turned to see his Uncle Glenn sitting on a stump, the white moon light highlighting his salt and pepper hair that he wore as a badge of honor from endless hours working at the docks.
“I’m sorry,” Edward blurted out quickly. “I’ll pay for it. Don’t worry.”
“That’s not what I’m concerned about, Edward.” Uncle Glenn ushered for Edward to join him on the stump, which he begrudgingly did while wiping the tears from his face that seemed to leak out despite his best attempts to get himself composed.“So, it was the man in black again, eh?” Uncle Glenn asked already knowing the answer.
“He’s still out there!” Edward yelled. “That monster is still out there and the police have done nothing to get him after 10 years!”
“And you think slicing a defenseless robot to pieces will magically make him appear before you?” Uncle Glenn asked suppressing a quiet chuckle.
“He was hardly defenseless, Uncle,” Edward retorted, which elicited a look from Uncle Glenn that Edward knew all to well; a stone-faced look that implicitly told Edward to stop sidestepping the conversation and start being honest. “But no, of course not.” Edward replied ashamedly, his voice trailing off.
Uncle Glenn brought his arm around Edward and drew him in close like he did when the sad 7 year old first stepped through his doorway, his life forever changed. “I miss your parents terribly too, and they would be so proud of the man you’ve grown up to be,” Uncle Glenn said. “You can’t let the demons of the past haunt your mind and twist you into something that you’re not. It wouldn’t do your parents justice if you let yourself be consumed by hate to the point where you would be just as bad as the White Fang.”
“Justice? What justice?” Edward asked incredulously. “The only justice for me would be to have that White Fang mongrel dead at my feet,” he mumbled darkly.
“You know that’s not true,” replied Uncle Glenn. “You know that there is a difference between justice and vengeance.”
He’s right, Edward thought. He’s always right. Edward knew that justice involved bringing criminals to court to bear responsibility for their crimes with the people to decide his fate, not through personal vendettas. Violence only breeds more violence. His father taught him that.
“Look, I know that this is a pain that will never fully heal,” Uncle Glenn continued. “I feel the same way, losing both my baby sister and my brother-in-law. To be angry and upset that they’re gone is only natural. But people are never truly gone. They live on in our memories and they live on in you, Edward. You are their greatest legacy. The time will come when the White Fang and the man in black will be judged for their crimes. But is it worth it to sell your soul to see that day happen?”
“No, you’re right. Thanks,” Edward answered while drying his eyes, finally able to wipe away the last vestiges of tears that seemed to flow endlessly a minute ago.
“That’s what I’m hear for,” Uncle Glenn replied with a smile, the same loving smile that so expertly masked pain and anguish in the face of tragedy. The same smile he gave Edward on that fateful day. “Now come on. You have a big day tomorrow. You need to get your rest.”
Then Edward and Uncle Glenn started walking back to the house with the broken sparing bot in tow, the moon light glistening off the metallic armor plating. Edward understood that he had worked too hard and come too far to give in to fear and hatred. This was the day he had been waiting for.
