Character Name: Robyn Watsun
Age: 17
Race: Female Human
Factions: Beacon Academy
Attitudes: Robyn is outgoing, charming, fearless and mischievous. She possesses the ability to walk up to any person and make a new friend, but she also has the ability to always find trouble, usually because she steals things from others. However, she doesn’t steal out of disregard for the law, but rather to take from those who have too much to help those who have too little, although she’s not above stealing to help herself if she needs something. She never steals from her friends or from those who have greater needs than her own. When she does find herself in trouble, she would rather try to sweet-talk her way out and avoid a direct confrontation if possible, but she’s not afraid to stand her ground and fight for what she thinks is right. She serves as a good friend and confidant to her cousin, Edward Locksher, and they both help each other and look out for one another.
Appearance: [Again, I’m not an artist, so the drawing is probably not very good.] Robyn is a little taller than her cousin, Edward (5’ 8”) with medium length, wavy blond hair, green eyes and a pale complexion. She wears a green blouse with a green skirt, both of which have black accents, and she wears a distinctive green fedora and black that matches her outfit. She refuses to leave the house without her fedora, even though it may not be part of the approved uniform for school.
Weapons: Robyn wields a high tension compound bow, which she affectionately refers to as “Little John,” and is able to fire at long ranges a number of different arrows using Dust to create different effects similar to Edward’s custom bullets. Unlike Edward, who pays for the Dust he uses, Robyn steals the Dust she needs by taking advantage of her father’s position at the docks to tap into shipments from the Schnee Dust Company, but she never takes more than she needs so that her thefts go unnoticed. She has become a proficient archer capable of bringing down large creatures of Grimm with long distance precision strikes and often favors long range combat over fighting in close quarters. However, she is not completely defenseless at close ranges because hidden within the bow are two curved short sabers that follow the contours of the bow. She is able to hold her own offensively and defensively with her short sabers, but lacks the same mastery of dual wielding swords that Edward earned, partly because of her preference of long range combat or avoiding conflict at all, and because she slacked off in this aspect of her training despite Edward tutoring her on dual wielding.
Other Info: Robyn’s semblance is known as “Adaptive Camouflage,” which allows her to create an energy field for a short period of time that makes her invisible to the casual eye, but her silhouette can be identified upon close inspection. This gives her the ability to sneak past people making it easier to steal things or escape/avoid conflict. However, sudden movements will destroy the effect and prolonged use drains her Aura and leaves her in a very weakened state. Additionally, it does not hide her heat signature or scent so someone using infrared technology or a creature of Grimm with a keen sense of smell may not be as easily fooled.
History: Robyn Watsun grew up in a poor household in Bakerstown outside the city of Vale. Her mother died giving birth to her, and her father, Glenn Watsun, earned a modest living working at the docks in Vale’s harbor. It was just barely enough for them to get by, and Robyn learned at a young age to use her natural skills with a bow and arrow to hunt the creatures of Grimm in their nearby forest and sell the pelts for extra money, thereby quickly dispelling any fear she may have had towards these soulless creatures. Whatever she didn’t earn by selling pelts, she made by stealing from the rich to not only help herself and her family, but also to help those who were even worse off than her. If she was ever caught, Robyn’s noble intentions, smooth talk, and willingness to accept the responsibility for her actions endeared her to the community and in most cases, she would only have to pay back what she stole or work it off in shoppes (under close supervision). Her father initially condemned Robyn’s thefts, but understood that these were petty thefts motivated by the good intentions of helping others, so he gradually stopped inquiring into her stealing.
When Edward showed up after his parents were killed, the two of them became friends quickly and some considered them to be siblings because of how close they were. At Icon Academy, the school they both attended, Robyn’s outgoing nature made it easy for her to make friends, but she would get herself in trouble when trying to steal from the bullies who stole the lunch money from other students. However, Edward was never far behind to jump into the fray to help bail out Robyn whenever she needed it. They confide in each other and help each other overcome their flaws and obstacles. Edward even tutored Robyn in dual wielding swords to round out her abilities, but Robyn had a bad habit of slacking off on her school work and training, and then frantically rushing to complete assignments just before the deadline. Despite her procrastination, she managed to earn good enough grades to rank among the top of her class (albeit a small graduating class) and qualify for the Beacon Academy entrance exams. Unlike Edward, who wants to be a Huntsman to promote justice, Robyn hopes that being a Huntress will lead to a lifestyle where she will be able to support her father so that he can retire while finally giving up the need to steal to help others.
Role Play Sample: [Again, I had an idea and ran with it, so sorry if it's a little long.]
Today was a good day, Robyn thought to herself as she strode up the path towards her house. She felt that she passed her Beacon Academy Entrance Exam with flying colors; not a single target made it within 15 yards of her, except for one cute little Ursa that snuck up on her looking to play, and “play” to an Ursa meant gnawing on her body like a chew toy. Fortunately, Edward’s lessons in dual wielding swords paid off against the Ursa that got just a little too close for her comfort. I’ll have to thank him for that, she thought, and I know just how to do it. On her way home, she managed to swipe a dozen of Edward’s favorite chocolate-glazed donuts, giving 10 to some of the hungry people outside the homeless shelter and leaving one each for Edward and herself. The thought of stealing reminded her that she used up more of her Dust arrows than she hoped to against some of the bigger Grimm, particularly her explosive arrows. She made a mental note to swing by the docks and see if another Dust shipment came in for her to “inspect.” She was on pretty good terms with her dad’s supervisor, Frank, who was gullible enough to allow her essentially free roam around the docks in exchange for some sweet words that stroked his ego. She didn’t even have to use her Semblance to get past him.
As Robyn burst into Edward’s room, she blurted out, "So, you really taught that sparing bot a lesson last night." Edward, lying on his bed in deep contemplation, merely sighed as if he expected his thieving cousin to know about the sparing bot he stole from the school last night for last minute practicing before the Beacon Exams and subsequently chopped the bot down into scrap metal.
"Now how could you possibly know that?" He asked half-heartedly.
"Oh, Eddie. As your cousin, it's my job to know all of your secrets," Robyn teased. "I'm actually quite impressed. 'Mister Righteous,' a fugitive of the law! It must have felt good to walk a mile on the dark side for once."
Edward didn't respond, instead returning his thoughts inward with an expression of concern wiped across his face, though she didn’t understand why: Edward graduated from Icon Academy at the top of the class and took down a Death Stalker all by himself in his Beacon exam. He should be ecstatic, Robyn thought. I know I would be bouncing off the walls knowing I was a lock to get into Beacon. “Hey, I got something for ya. It’s your favorite.”
“Did you steal that?” Edward asked accusingly.
“What? Me?” Robyn replied jokingly. “How could you say something like that? It’s like you don’t know me at all,” Robyn stated as she turned her head, folded her arms, and failed to suppress a grin. When her eyes returned to Edward, all she could see was a scowl. “Oh, just relax and eat it. Even you can agree that stealing a little food for the needy is at least a little better than robbing a bank for personal gain. And besides, I'd have to steal a hundred of these things in order to come close to the value of the robot you smashed.”
Edward just shrugged and took the donut without saying a word as his face returned to that same neutral yet concerned expression of deep internal thought. Robyn could easily tell that Edward was too preoccupied to engage her in another philosophical debate that would end with them agreeing to disagree like always. Something was bothering him.
“All kidding aside,” Robyn continued as she plopped on the bed next to Edward. “What’s on your mind? You should be thrilled! You aced your Beacon Entrance Exam. We’re practically in!”
“That’s not what I’m concerned about,” Edward replied. He sat up, took a deep breath, and said, “What if I get to Beacon and can’t make any friends? I certainly haven’t been able to make many friends at Icon.”
“I wouldn’t let that worry you,” Robyn replied as she turned to face him. “First off, Icon was a very small school. There were only ten of us old enough to qualify for the entrance exams. Secondly, most of the people at Icon weren’t such great friends.”
“But you were friends with everyone,” Edward interrupted.
“Well, yeah, of course I was,” Robyn responded. “There were friends for hanging out, there were friends that were just acquaintances, there were friends who were good for a couple practical jokes, even if it was at their expense. But everyone was all just so competitive fighting to be on top of a small hill, too focused on themselves. There weren’t really any friends that I would trust save for a few.”
“Yeah? Who?” Edward inquired.
“Well, you for example,” Robyn said. “To you, school wasn’t a competition. That may have been because you were always the best at everything,” the extra emphasis added drew a small smile from Edward. “But also it was because you genuinely cared about me, and it was always reassuring knowing you would have my back no matter what.”
“But what if we get to Beacon and find out that the rumors of teams are true, and you and I don’t end up together on a team?” Edward asked.
“Really? Come on and use that big brain of yours,” Robyn said as she started poking against Edward’s temple. “If we don’t end up on a team together, am I magically going to disappear and you’ll never see me again? No, of course not. That would be silly. Although, I am getting better at disappearing….” Another scowl from Edward, but this one could barely contain the grin forming on his face as he suppressed the urge to laugh. “It’ll take more than silly team assignments to break us up. We’re practically family.”
“We are family, Robyn,” Edward replied.
“Exactly! And who knows who we’ll meet at Beacon. It’s a new start for both of us, and we’ll go through it together,” Robyn exclaimed.
As Robyn stood to leave the room, Edward smiled and said, “Thanks, cuz.”
“Any time, cuz,” replied Robyn with a smile of her own. As she closed Edward’s bedroom door behind her, her smile grew wider at the thought that Edward shared the same fears as her about leaving home to start something new; that someone as infallible as Edward was just as vulnerable as she was at times. But the thought of Edward coming to her aid whenever she needed it, and the thought of her doing the same for him, made those previous fears seem trivial. A new adventure was about to start for both of them and nothing could bring them down. Yep, definitely a good day.
