Alrighty, so I created this thread so that we could all throw our opinions and such out there. For instance...
I think that the monkey guy (I don't remember his name) may be a student who is participating in the competition.

Sun Wukong? Yang already said "Well, Weiss, you wanted to check out the competition..." *Sun runs off* "...and there it goes." It's already implied that Sun is there for the tournament.
Then again, the tournament is for students. They will most likely show up in groups. It seems unlikely that a student would, instead of joining his team, run off, stow away on a boat and hitch a ride to the Festival. So who is he representing?

I have no clue. He strikes me as the rebellious type. Maybe it's in his character to leave his group and stowaway just for the fun of it...

Or perhaps Beacon is the only school or one of the only schools that uses a team system.

Ah, good point. That would mean that the tournament would be based on one-on-one combat.

There could be both team and solo competitions in the tournament as separate events. Maybe there would even be a duo partner battles in which Ruby and Weiss will have to learn how to fight together. Their first duo battle in the Emerald Forest didn't exactly go that well, so this will be a way for them to improve their relationship even further by working together. Weiss could help Ruby learn to exercise more caution and strategy in a battle while Weiss learns to follow Ruby's lead as team leader.

That's true too.

I remember when I was watching the trailers, I observed that Ruby's fighting style didn't seem particularly great to have team members around. She's always all over the place, shooting in random directions to send herself flying or swinging her sythe. It seems way too easy to hurt someone unintentionally. So, I've had this suspicion ever since about the third episode: Cinder might be Ruby's mother/sister. They both dress in red and have dark brown/black hair. Cinder's eyes are gold, Ruby's eyes are silver. Ozpin is always watching Ruby, and we know he has something against Cinder from the last episode. The fact that fire seems to be her semblance supports the idea that her name might actually be Summer...as in Summer Rose. I've just been thinking that...I'm probably totally wrong, but that's why this is called "speculation."

Ruby's fighting style proved to be pretty dangerous around others when she and Weiss fought together for the first time. Since I'm still pretty new to the fandom, I'm having trouble keeping character names straight. Cinder is the one who battled Goodwitch in the first episode, right?

I've actually thought a lot about this subject. I don't think Cinder is Ruby's mother, but actually her aunt, since her fire semblance is similar to Yang's but much more developed. I think Ruby's mother, Summer Rose, died in some battle since we see her grave at the beginning of the Red trailer. My guess is that Cinder and Summer used to be very close until some dark force corrupted Cinder's soul, like maybe some type of super-Grimm that sucks people's souls or corrupts the ones that are partially devoured.
If you read the lyrics to the song "Red Like Roses, Part II," there's a lot of references to Summer sacrificing herself for some greater good, but leaving Ruby feeling abandoned and then having to face a greater burden when this evil force returns that Summer sacrificed herself to stop but in vain. And I think the evil plot that Summer tried to stop involved the destruction of the moon, which could provide some type of energy force that gives Dust its power. If there's no moon, Dust wouldn't work and society would collapse in the ensuing darkness. Notice how in some shots the moon has fragments floating near it but is still pretty much intact. Summer could have prevented the total destruction of the moon as some dark force only managed to break off a piece of it, but it cost her life. I'd also speculate that Ozpin and Ruby's Uncle Krow were also involved judging by the way they're watching Ruby's and Cinder's movements at the end of Episode 16. That message "The Queen has Pawns" could refer to Cinder hiring the White Fang to be like a private army amassing enough Dust to launch a full scale attack on Vale and Beacon to overwhelm the Huntsmen and Huntresses so that a second attempt to destroy the moon goes unchallenged.

Yes, Jax, Cinder is the fan name given to the woman who fought Glynda in episode one. She never showed up again until the very end of episode 16. We don't know her real name yet; she's even listed in the credits as "Cinder."
So, I didn't notice until I watched the DVD with commentary, but did anyone note that the message Ozpin received was sent by Ruby's uncle? Qrow. I thought that was rather interesting.

If we follow Ace's idea (which I like) this story could end up having like a Kingdom Hearts spin put on it, with the darkness overtaking people. Since Ozpin and Qrow seem to know each other rather well, I think that maybe part of the reason Ozpin seems so interested in Ruby is because of Summer. There could be like some kind of Lily/Snape thing going on there (though it's a long shot). But if Summer sacrificed herself and set the villains' plot back, that would explain why Qrow is so heavily involved in keeping tabs on the bad guys. Not only that, but if he's reporting his findings to Ozpin, the headmaster of a school that trains Hunters, could it be that he's actually training them for something more than fighting creatures of Grimm? Or maybe, as Ace suggested, a greater darkness, perhaps even the one that gave birth to the creatures?

That is one of the things that has been rather confusing to me about the whole premise. They say Beacon is a school that's training them how to fight creatures of Grimm, but for their initiation, they're thrown (literally) into a forest full of these monsters and are told to fight their way to a temple, get and artifact, and fight their way back. So if they already know how to fight and kill these monsters, what are they actually going to school for?

I think a war might be brewing. The White Fang think that they're main players in this conflict, but I think that they're just a cover for a bigger set up.

Actually, the woman's name is indeed Cinder. Cinder Fall. She had been named "Crimson" by the community, which turned out to be incorrect. The R W B Y team confirmed this, along with hints of two other important female characters. Including Summer Rose (most likely Ruby's mother), we have:
? Summer Rose Cinder Fall ?
It is heavily implied that there will eventually be a character named "Spring" and a character named "Winter." Their role in the series is entirely speculation, but we do know that both Fall and Summer exist.
